Baton of Hope Conference: ‘Making Suicide Prevention Everyone’s Business’
How do we break the stagnation in UK suicide statistics? How can we offer hope to a generation of young adults for whom suicide is the biggest killer? How do we unite to speak with one voice and offer the most effective solutions to one of the country’s most overlooked and stigmatised catastrophes?
The Baton Of Hope is inviting you to take part in our first annual conference. Our speakers will include journalist, political strategist and mental health campaigner Alastair Campbell. We will also hear from the president of the International Association for Suicide Prevention Prof. Rory O’Connor who states unequivocally that suicide is preventable. And Sally Orange MBE; an endurance runner, adventure athlete & mental health campaigner. She holds multiple Guinness world records and world firsts, has run over 80 marathons & completed 8 full Ironman triathlons. Also speaking will be Chris Moon MBE who is one of the few Westerners to have survived capture by the Khmer Rouge and who now takes part in international triathlons despite having lost an arm and a leg in an explosion while helping to clear land mines. Plus you will be able to see the exquisite Baton Of Hope designed and crafted by Royal warrant holders Thomas Lyte.
The conference is sponsored by one of the Baton Of Hope’s partners Westfield Health – a not-for-profit health and well-being company with almost 9,000 corporate clients across the UK and Europe. Its chief executive Dave Capper said:
“When it comes to suicide prevention, it’s not enough to keep numbers where they are. We need to keep talking about it. We need to understand how we as individuals and collectively as a society can help more people survive mental health challenges. That’s exactly what Baton of Hope are doing in their first national conference and we’re incredibly proud to be supporting their vital work.”
Where: The Octagon Centre, Sheffield.
When: Thursday May 16th. 9.30am-4 pm.
